Floridians Will Be Asked to Vote Out the Alien Land Law of 1926 on the Fall Ballot

September 15th, 2008 · No Comments

Call me ignorant, but I never heard of the alien land law of 1926 until today. The law can stop people ineligible for US citizenship from owning property in the state of Florida.

I did a little digging and it turns out the law came into existence out of fears that Asian immigrants would work for less than Americans on farms. I think that fear still exists today with Mexican Americans.

I just heard about it today because it was announced that an amendment removing this law will be on the fall ballot. I guess we can repeal this law with 60% of the votes.

You’d think in this day an age, a repeal is almost a certainty but in this age of terrorism there could be an argument that we still need this law to restrict home ownership from people who pose a threat to this country.

They could still rent and if you’re going to commit some act of terrorism, you’re probably not going to buy a house in your name. Then again, the former home of Osama Bin Laden’s brother on John’s Lake in Winter Garden did just sell to a local couple. Osama’s brother bought this house even with this law.

There’s also the flat out racists out there who’ll oppose repealing this law as well. I don’t think there’s too many out there, but there’s definitely a few. I’ve heard my fair share of Kung Fu jokes in my day, but for the most part people aren’t racist at least not to me.

I guess there was a time in this country where Asian Americans did face the same scrutinies as Cubans, Mexicans, and other immigrants face today. I definitely feel more sympathy for those guys after hearing about this alien land law.

I love this country and I would love it even more if we got rid of this crazy law. Most other states have gotten rid of this law already and there’s only one other state with this law still so we’re not going out on a limb here. I’m not a lawyer, but it sounds unconstitutional to me. Let’s stick with the program guys. It’s all about the Constitution.
