I had to locate some underground utilities at my home this past week and a little banging around on the internet showed there’s a free service to locate them. All you have to do is dial 811.
Well, I dialed the number and it didn’t work. I had to dial 800-638-4097 instead, but they came out and marked the utilities within 2 business days. Best of all, it was free. Knowing my luck, I’m sure I would’ve taken power or water out for the rest of the street if I just started digging.
Once they’ve marked the utilities, you can check by logging into the Call Before You Dig website and putting in your ticket number and they send you an email so you don’t even have to be there.
Why can’t the government make everything this easy.
They say you can dig within 24″ of the color coded markings. Red signifies power lines, blue signifies water, and green signifies sewer.
So before you dig, dial 811 if it works. If not, dial the 800 number.
